Inspired by the best-selling factual book on the traditional realm of the fantastic, this half-hour uses an original story by Christopher Gore to employ many of the extraordinary creatures that had been catalogued by Brian Froud and Alan Lee. Like ''Gnomes,'' ''Faeries'' was published by Harry N.
Abrams and has been adapted for television by Tomorrow Entertainment. The television story has enough incidents to fill at least three half-hours. Lured into a strange forest territory, young Oisin discovers the King of Faerie, whose strength is being sapped by his own Shadow.
The Shadow, consumed by his own power, has left the king to consort with malevolent creatures. It threatens to abduct the king's daughter, Princess Niamh. Oisin, assisted by a lively pixie named Puck, sets out to destroy the dreaded Shadow. On the way, they have encounters with a slew of strange characters, including the Hags, three witches cackling over a cauldron and a many-armed imp with a pronounced Irish brogue.
Providing still another strong indication - along with such projects as Ralph Bashki's ''American Pop'' -that animation is in the midst of an important resurgence, ''Faeries'' was produced by Norton Virgien, Fred Hellmich and Lee Mishkin.
